Sliced Pixel Prints: Pushing the boundaries of screen printing.

December 3th, 2011

It's been quite a while ago since I started a experiment that would later result in, what I now call, the Sliced Pixel Project. A project that received a very positive response of the design community, has been featured on thousands of websites, multiple magazines and could even been seen on exhibitions.

...printing the Fox has been one of the most challenging screen printing jobs we have ever done...

- Pictures On Walls

In the summer of this year I was approached by Pictures On Walls to get the Sliced Pixel artworks professionally screen printed. And so it happened that the talented team at Pictures On Walls worked, in secret, to produce the first ever screen printed Sliced Pixel artwork. Pictures On Walls or POW is a London based print publisher who decided they liked a challenge. With nearly every print POW produces they try to experiment and they are constantly pushing the boundaries of what conventional screen printing is all about. This is most definitly true in the case of the Sliced Pixel Fox, the premiere print. With roughly 350 colours in the original artwork, it's one hell of a job to transform that into one screen printed artwork.

Deconstructing the artwork

When using the screen printing technique, you can only print one color at the time. Looking at the Sliced Pixel Fox, it would seem like a daunting task, transforming that into a screen print. With roughly 350 colors in the original artwork it would take you forever to print all the colors separately. The solution is both genius as most difficult. The original artwork was deconstructed into ten separate layers, all with their own Pantone color, every triangle a different tone, then, when all the 10 layers are overlayed they recreate the Fox in a most accurate way. You can imagine the time it takes to calculate every tone, choosing the right Pantone colors, and finally printing the 10 layers carefully on top of each other. The result is quite stunning to say the least.

Pictures On Walls

The Pictures On Walls print press and gallery space was established in East London in 2001 by disaffected artists as a means of producing affordable art and sidestepping the traditional gallery by selling it direct to the public over the internet. It has since produced a huge range of iconic images and is widely credited as one of the driving forces behind the movement known as ‘Street Art’ boasting an impressive back catalogue of artists and exhibitions by Banksy, Jamie Hewlett (Gorillaz), Modern Toss, Antony Micallef and Paul Insect.
